“Pink, it’s my new obsession,” screamed Steven Tyler in his 1997 hit, “Pink.” Although the song’s lyrics made it obvious that Aerosmith was (yet again) making music about sex, once the video dropped, it became clear that “Pink” was more than just a vagina-positive song. It became an anthem for joyful gender expression, for bodies and their many defiant variations.

The beauty of this trend lies in the fact that it isn’t restricted to gender, and has been donned by some the biggest celebrities in the world from Zendaya and Anne Hathaway to Aishwariya Rai Bachchan and Ranveer Singh. Designer Masaba Gupta recently gave an Indian spin to this trend with her ‘Ranicore’ chanderi mul sari.
